CEASEFIRE TAKES EFFECT FOR REPAIRS AT ZAPORIZHZHIA NUCLEAR PLANT By GPC.NEWS Editorial Team September 06, 2026 ZAPORIZHZHIA, UKRAINE — A temporary ceasefire brokered with the involvement of the International Atomic Energy Agency has taken effect around Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, allowing critical repair work to proceed at the Russian-occupied facility. The arrangement is intended to give technicians access to damaged infrastructure and restore external electricity supplies. The plant has been dependent on emergency power after losing its connection to the external grid, renewing concerns over the safety of Europe's largest nuclear power station. Although the plant's reactors are not operating normally, reliable electricity remains essential for cooling systems and other nuclear-safety functions. Repeated damage to transmission lines during the war has made the facility one of the most persistent nuclear-security concerns since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. IAEA personnel have maintained a presence at the site and repeatedly called on both sides to avoid military activity that could endanger the plant. Previous temporary arrangements have allowed repair crews to work on damaged power lines, but fighting in the surrounding region continues to pose a risk. The latest ceasefire provides another opportunity to stabilize the facility, but it does not resolve the wider security situation surrounding Zaporizhzhia.
